STORYLINE:
Hundreds of people took to the streets of Portland on Friday, calling for federal immigration agents to leave the city.
Demonstrators gathered at Elizabeth Caruthers Park before marching to the Portland Immigration and Customs Enforcement building, waving signs and banners aloft as they chanted for an end to ICE operations in the city.
It comes as the Trump administration launches what officials are calling the largest federal immigration enforcement operation ever carried out.
Tensions escalated Wednesday after Renee Good was shot and killed in her car by a federal immigration agent in Minneapolis.
A day after Good was killed in Minneapolis, a federal border officer shot and wounded a man and woman in a vehicle, identified by the Department of Homeland Security as Venezuela nationals Luis David Nico Moncada and Yorlenys Betzabeth Zambrano-Contreras.
Police said they were in stable condition Friday after surgery, with DHS saying Nico Moncada was taken into FBI custody.
DHS defended the actions of its officers in Portland, saying the shooting occurred after the driver with alleged gang ties tried to “weaponize” his vehicle to hit them. It said no officers were injured.
